May is Mental Health Awareness month. When we understand mental health, we can take charge of our health and offer better support to friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors.

Understanding mental health encourages empathy over judgment and connection over isolation. The fear of judgment often prevents countless individuals from seeking the help that they need and deserve. By talking openly and honestly about mental health challenges, we can normalize these human experiences and create a safer environment for people to reach out.

Seeking timely support can significantly improve outcomes and prevent conditions from escalating. Mental Health Awareness month isn't just about individual struggles. It’s about creating a more resilient and stronger community. Let's continue to talk, listen, and learn. Let’s continue to create a community where mental well-being is valued and supported for everyone.

If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health struggles, please know that you’re not alone. There are local organizations and professionals in our community who are ready to take your call and get you the support that you need. Head over to the "resources" page to learn more about some of these organizations.

Remember, if there is an immediate threat to safety or a severe psychiatric emergency, always dial 9-11. Let the operator know that there is a mental health crisis so that they can possibly dispatch first responder mental health help or a social worker if available.

Crisis lines are best used for immediate emotional support, safety planning and during times of crisis or distress. Warm lines are best used for support and connection when not in a crisis.

Together, we can erase the stigma that silences those in need and bring awareness to mental health. By having open conversations, promoting understanding, and advocating for change, we can create a world where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, and where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
